Ovako proposes a testbed electrolyzer in the size order of 17 MW to generate hydrogen and oxygen for heating steel up to 1200C, as the first ever in the world, and show the way for significant CO2 savings. The system also offers a flexibility of instantaneously switching between electrolyzer and LPG through which balancing of the electricity grid can be achieved. This kind of solution could also build an infrastructure to make fuel cells in long haul trucking viable with the use of O2 at the steel works subsidizing the H2 cost.
